His account, shared during a White House memorial event on Sept. 8, included a dramatic memory of firefighters carrying him away while they feared a nearby building could collapse.

The remarks have revived a long-running debate over Trump’s activities after the attacks on the World Trade Center. Historical accounts place him in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001, and show that he later traveled to Lower Manhattan. Yet no public documentation has established that he took part in rescue operations, recovery work, or cleanup at Ground Zero.

A personal account during a memorial event

Trump used the White House event to remember the attacks as a New Yorker who watched the destruction unfold from the city. He described seeing the crisis from his window before later going toward Lower Manhattan.

I looked out my window, and I saw things that I never want to see again.

He also recalled an episode near the disaster area in which firefighters believed they needed to leave quickly because of a possible structural collapse. Trump said the responders physically picked him up and ran with him.

They literally lifted me up. This is not easy to do. I’m big. They lifted me up and they started running with me.

The president did not identify the exact building involved, the location of the encounter, or the date it occurred. That lack of detail helped fuel questions about how his account fit into the established timeline of the days following the attacks.

Trump insists he visited shortly after the attacks

Later on Sept. 8, Trump pushed back sharply in a Truth Social post. He said he had gone to the World Trade Center site shortly after the attacks with construction workers and security personnel, while emphasizing that he was not there on the day the towers collapsed.

I was there, obviously not on the same day as the collapse, but shortly thereafter, with a large group of Construction Workers.

Trump demanded corrections from news organizations that challenged his description and cited Matthew Calamari, the former security chief of the Trump Organization, as someone who has repeatedly confirmed the visit. He characterized the coverage as unfair and politically driven.

The dispute also included questions over Trump’s decision to attend a Pentagon ceremony rather than the Ground Zero observance in New York this year. Trump rejected the idea that the choice was connected to rules limiting political speeches at the New York memorial event.

What is established about Trump’s presence in Lower Manhattan

There is evidence that Trump visited the area around the World Trade Center in the days after Sept. 11. A Newsday article from Sept. 13, 2001, placed him at Ground Zero. A German television interview from that date also showed Trump several blocks away from the site as he discussed plans to send workers into Lower Manhattan.

In the same interview, Trump said more workers were expected to arrive.

We have over 100 and we have about 125 coming. So we’ll have a couple hundred people down here.

Those images and contemporaneous accounts support that Trump was present in the broader disaster area after the attacks. They do not, however, establish that he personally worked in the rescue, recovery, or cleanup effort. Available public records have not documented such participation.

Former emergency officials have also challenged claims that Trump was involved in Ground Zero operations. Richard Alles, who was an FDNY battalion chief on Sept. 11 and spent months overseeing work at the site, said in 2019 that he had no knowledge of Trump working there.

Why the issue remains sensitive

The argument arrives at a particularly emotional moment for victims’ relatives, survivors, first responders, and New Yorkers preparing to commemorate the anniversary. The Sept. 11 attacks killed nearly 3,000 people and remain the deadliest attack on U.S. soil. The anniversary regularly brings attention not only to the people who died, but also to the police officers, firefighters, medical workers, construction crews, volunteers, and recovery teams who responded over the following months.

For that reason, claims involving Ground Zero carry unusual weight. The site became both the center of an emergency response and a lasting national symbol of loss, resilience, and public service. Descriptions of who was present, what they witnessed, and how they contributed are often closely examined because they relate to one of the defining events in modern American history.

The White House defended Trump’s remarks on Sept. 9, saying he was speaking broadly about his experience of a city affected by the attacks in the immediate aftermath and over the days and weeks that followed. Spokesperson Davis Ingle said the president’s memorial comments were intended to honor victims’ families and first responders, while dismissing criticism as a media-driven political attack.

Trump’s comments have therefore left two related but distinct questions at the center of the discussion: whether he visited Lower Manhattan after the attacks, and whether there is evidence that he played a role in the response effort. Historical material supports the first point. The second remains unsubstantiated in public records.
