Financial Resolution Arrives for Carroll-Trump Legal Dispute
Payment Disbursed After Extended Legal Battle
E Jean Carroll gets 5 6M – After more than three years of legal proceedings, New York-based author E. Jean Carroll is receiving her financial compensation from Donald Trump. A federal civil jury previously found the former president responsible for both sexually abusing and defaming the writer, though Trump maintains his innocence regarding these allegations. Court documentation reveals that over $5.6 million, which includes accumulated interest, was distributed on July 14 from funds Trump had been required to deposit while pursuing his appeal.
This disbursement comes following several weeks of negotiations regarding whether Trump had exhausted all avenues to avoid paying his accuser. The U.S. Supreme Court made its decision on June 29, declining to review Trump’s appeal, which cleared the path for Carroll to seek payment. She subsequently petitioned the Manhattan trial court to compel Trump to satisfy the $5 million judgment awarded by the jury, along with applicable interest. Despite Trump’s opposition to this request, a federal judge determined on July 8 that the time had come for payment to be made.
Judge’s Order Emphasizes Timeliness
In his July 8 ruling, Judge Lewis A. Kaplan, who received his appointment from President Bill Clinton, expressed frustration with the prolonged nature of the proceedings. The judge wrote that Trump “has been stalling this case for years,” and emphasized that “It is time for him to ‘do equity’ and pay the judgment.” This language underscored the court’s position that the legal process should not be indefinitely delayed by the defendant.
Carroll’s lawsuit centers on her claim that Trump assaulted her in a department store dressing room during the 1990s. Beyond the physical assault, she alleged that Trump damaged her reputation when he publicly characterized her allegations as a “con job” in 2022. Trump has strongly denied these accusations and has challenged the Manhattan civil jury’s unanimous verdict from 2023, which found him liable for both sexual abuse and defamation.
Separate Case Remains Under Appeal
Carroll’s legal victory against Trump extends beyond the initial case. In a separate proceeding, a Manhattan civil jury awarded her $83.3 million from Trump in 2024. This substantial award was based on the jury’s determination that Trump defamed Carroll in 2019 when he initially denied her allegations. That particular case remains under active litigation as Trump continues to pursue an appeal.
The July 14 disbursement represents a significant milestone in Carroll’s pursuit of justice. The funds were held in escrow during Trump’s appeal process, ensuring that Carroll would receive her compensation regardless of the outcome. The combination of the original $5 million judgment and accumulated interest brought the total to more than $5.6 million, reflecting both the severity of the jury’s findings and the passage of time since the verdict was rendered.
Legal observers note that the Supreme Court’s decision not to review the appeal was a crucial turning point. By declining to take up the case, the highest court in the land allowed the lower court’s judgment to stand, effectively closing one chapter in what has become a lengthy legal saga. Carroll’s ability to now collect the full amount marks the culmination of years of litigation, during which Trump consistently contested the findings against him.
The ongoing appeal in the separate $83.3 million case means that Carroll’s financial recovery from Trump is not yet complete. However, the recent disbursement demonstrates that at least one portion of her legal victories is now being honored, providing tangible recognition of the jury’s findings regarding Trump’s conduct toward the New York writer.
