Illinois Authorities Detain Two Juveniles Following Fatal Family Shooting Spree

2 teens arrested after 5 family – Two adolescents are now in police custody after a series of shootings across the East St. Louis region claimed five lives and left two others with serious wounds, according to law enforcement officials. The tragic events unfolded over several locations within a short distance of each other, all targeting individuals connected to the same family.

Arrest at Frank Holten State Park

Illinois State Police apprehended the suspects, aged fifteen and sixteen, on July 12 at Frank Holten State Park, a recreational facility situated close to East St. Louis. Officers successfully executed a precision immobilization technique, commonly known as a PIT maneuver, to bring a vehicle under control after one of the teenagers was behind the wheel.

During a short press briefing, Illinois State Police Director Brendan Kelly explained that the violence occurred at three separate spots within just a few miles of each other. Kelly confirmed that at least seven family members were shot at various locations throughout the East St. Louis area. Five victims have been officially confirmed dead, while two others remain hospitalized with serious injuries.

“At least seven members of the targeted family were shot at multiple locations in the East St. Louis area, and as of right now, five victims have been confirmed deceased,” Kelly stated, noting that the remaining two victims sustained serious wounds.

Victims Identified

State police have publicly named the five individuals who lost their lives in the shootings. The deceased include Cherie L. May, forty-nine years old; Devin D. May, twenty-four; Patricia A. May, seventy-four; Quentin L. Thompson, twenty-one; and Shania W. Thompson, twenty-five.

According to Kelly, one victim was found near the intersection of North 39th Street and Summit Avenue. Three others were killed at the Samuel Gompers Homes housing complex, while another died at Jones Park. The two surviving victims were also wounded at Jones Park and are currently receiving treatment at a hospital in St. Louis.

“These alleged acts of horrific violence, taking this number of lives, here in this community, it’s terrible. It’s evil, but it will not keep this city down,” Kelly expressed during the news conference.

Investigation and Community Context

Director Kelly mentioned that at least one of the suspects shares a family connection with the victims. State police have chosen not to release additional information regarding the suspects or the specific circumstances that led to the shootings. The investigation continues, and authorities are collaborating with the St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office to pursue charges against the teenagers.

East St. Louis, located in St. Clair County and home to approximately 18,000 residents according to the U.S. Census Bureau, sits directly across the Mississippi River from downtown St. Louis. The city has experienced several domestic-related shootings in recent months, highlighting ongoing concerns about family violence in the region.

Recent Domestic Violence Incidents Nationwide

This East St. Louis tragedy follows other notable domestic violence cases across the United States. In early June, a man in suburban Detroit killed four family members, including his parents and his brother’s girlfriend, before turning himself in to police. Authorities described the suspect as having a “contentious relationship” with his parents at the time.

Earlier in June, a fifty-two-year-old man in eastern Iowa killed six family members during what appeared to be a domestic dispute before taking his own life when confronted by officers. In May, Houston police investigated a murder-suicide involving four relatives found fatally shot in their home, with evidence suggesting a fifty-two-year-old man shot his wife and two children before killing himself.

Additional incidents include a mass shooting in northwest Louisiana in April that left eight children dead, with the suspected gunman killing seven of his own children and injuring his wife and another woman. That same month, former Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax fatally shot his wife, Cerina Fairfax, before killing himself. The couple was going through a “complicated or messy” divorce, according to Fairfax County Police Department Chief Ken Davis. Their teenage son and daughter were present at the home during the incident but were not harmed.

According to the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions, domestic violence represents a “public health crisis,” particularly given the accessibility and availability of firearms in America.
