Where’s Melania? ‘I heard you missed me,’ first lady quips

Cybersecarmor.com – Wearing a bright red Dior pencil skirt and a sky-blue oversized shirt by Michael Kors, first lady Melania Trump sought to quiet the noise about her perceived absence from official duties.

"I heard you missed me," the first lady quipped after she emerged hand in hand with her husband from the Oval Office on Aug. 20 and walked up to the lectern in the Rose Garden in her Manolo suede pumps. "Here I am."

It was an entrance and a statement aimed at a flurry of recent articles with a central theme: Where's Melania?

Her last public sighting was more than a month ago when she attended the 2026 World Cup final on July 19.

The first lady took the stage to announce that her Fostering the Future initiative will expand its national network through a $2 million donation from IndyCar and Fox Corporation to fund scholarships at Indiana University and Purdue University.

"The greatest achievement, investment America can make is not in technology, infrastructure, or capital markets. It's our children," she said. "But America's greatest competitive advantage remains in its own people. Tomorrow’s leaders are sitting in classrooms today, including those growing up in foster care. Their capability is no less remarkable."

The initiative is now part of 26 universities across the country, such as the University of Texas, the University of North Carolina, Dominican University in New York and Pepperdine University.

Marking the event, IndyCar’s Freedom 250 Grand Prix drivers who will zip through Washington, DC, on Aug. 23, also presented the first lady with a custom helmet.

The helmet, designed by IndyCar's drivers in recognition of her Be Best initiative, is inscribed with "Melania Be Best Fostering the Future" and has a red-white-and-blue theme.

The first lady has drawn scrutiny for what some critics have said is a light schedule in her husband’s second term as president, skipping high-profile events such as Sen. Lindsey Graham’ s funeral and the Patriot Games , a national teenage athletic competition in Ohio. She also chose to skip the rescheduled White House Correspondents' Dinner in July.

Multiple news outlets have tracked the first lady’s public engagement and found that she was seen only 38 days through the first seven months of 2026 – about half as many times as she appeared during Trump’s first term during the same time period. She was last seen publicly at the 2026 World Cup final on July 19 .

But that doesn’t mean she has been working behind the scenes , her senior adviser Marc Beckman told USA TODAY.

"This First Lady is about results. She is not about optics," Beckman said.

He pointed to the House's passage of the Fostering the Future Act in May and the work she's doing to advance it to a vote in the Senate, adding she was personally lobbying Senate Majority Leader John Thune.

He also mentioned her efforts to reunite children with their families displaced by the Russia-Ukraine war, after she personally wrote a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin . The most recent reunion occurred on Aug. 17 when she helped bring home the 34th child.

On Aug. 20, the first lady chose to focus on the outcome of her initiative.

"I am very proud to share that this past spring, Fostering the Future scholarships supported the education of our first doctor," she said. "He will change the lives of so many people."
