Ultra-marathon champion dies while running Cape Wrath trail

Ultra-Marathon Champion Dies During Cape Wrath Trail Attempt

A 35-year-old ultra-marathon runner from Dumfries has tragically lost his life while navigating the rugged Highlands. David Parrish was competing in the Cape Wrath trail, a 234-mile (376km) course stretching from Fort William to Cape Wrath, when he passed away. The incident occurred in the remote mountainous region of Kintail, located in the north-west Highlands, and was discovered on Saturday evening at approximately 22:25. Police Scotland confirmed there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death, with his family notified of the event.

A Legacy of Speed and Dedication

Parrish, a former Royal Marine, had previously triumphed in the Cape Wrath Trail race in 2023, despite only entering competitive running a few years prior. His latest endeavor aimed to set a new record for the fastest completion of the route. The trail, which traverses areas like Lochaber, Knoydart, Applecross, and Torridon, is widely recognized as one of the UK’s most grueling challenges.

Fundraising in Honor of a Fallen Friend

His participation in the race was driven by a fundraising initiative for Scottish Mountain Rescue, inspired by the memory of his close friend Luke Ireland. The 20-year-old Royal Marine from Monifeith had died in the mountains of Glen Clova, Angus, in November 2014. Parrish’s message on his charity page highlighted the tireless efforts of mountain rescue volunteers, noting their readiness to assist in emergencies across Scotland’s remote landscapes. The campaign has amassed thousands of pounds in donations, with many expressing admiration for his commitment.

“The world and the sport will be a far lesser place without him.”

From Military to Marathon

Parrish first began running in his late teens, progressing to local 5km and 10km races in his early 20s. After leaving the Royal Marines, he joined Parkruns and later completed the Cape Wrath Trail in 2021. He often described running as a way to unwind from the pressures of his military career. His accomplishments earned him club champion status at Dumfries Running Club in 2022, underscoring his passion for the sport.

Community Tributes

A photograph of Parrish during the 2023 Cape Wrath event was captured by No Limits Photography. The company’s owners, Harriet D’Alessio and Christiaan Le Roux, shared their tribute on Tuesday. “David has always been such a joyful person and an inspirational ultra-marathon athlete to spend time with,” they remarked. “The world and the sport will be a far lesser place without him.”
