The remaining injured parties include a 56-year-old woman, a 39-year-old woman, a 23-year-old man, and a 2-year-old boy. Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson issued an updated statement confirming that police had taken a suspect into custody. She had previously indicated that two individuals were being held in connection with the incident. “What happened at the Seattle Center today was an act of horrific violence,” Wilson said. “Impacted families are living through the worst moment of their lives, and an entire community is trying to understand how a gathering built around culture, connection, and joy ended in gunfire.”

The mayor emphasized that residents should never have to consider the possibility of being shot while attending community events or simply enjoying their city. She acknowledged that many people who escaped physical harm will carry emotional scars for years to come, including witnesses, workers, first responders, and families anxiously awaiting news about their loved ones.

A Beloved Festival Interrupted

The Bite of Seattle, established in 1982, has served as a summer staple in the Pacific Northwest for more than four decades. This year’s festival featured over 130 food and beverage vendors, live cooking demonstrations, musical performances, and various other activities that drew thousands of attendees.

Estan Wakonabo, 35, shared his experience with The Seattle Times, recounting how he was at the festival with his girlfriend when gunfire erupted. He described the scene as pure chaos, noting that people trampled over one another during the panic. Wakonabo later observed several gunshot victims lying on the ground as the situation unfolded.

Official Response and Investigation

Washington State Governor Bob Ferguson posted on X that the Washington State Patrol SWAT team was en route to assist Seattle police at their request. He expressed his prayers for the victims’ families and the emergency personnel working to ensure public safety.

“My prayers are with the families of the victims, and the responders as they work to keep people safe,” Ferguson wrote.

U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, a Democrat representing Washington, characterized the incident as senseless violence on her X platform. She noted that local and state leaders, including Mayor Wilson and Governor Ferguson, were closely monitoring the developing situation. Jayapal thanked law enforcement and first responders for their dedication and promised updates as more details emerged.

“Gun violence changes families forever. Its trauma reaches far beyond the people struck by bullets.
