Tragedy Strikes San Francisco Bay: One Dead, Two Missing After Pontoon Boat Capsizes Near Alcatraz

1 dead 2 missing after boat – A devastating maritime incident unfolded on Tuesday afternoon when a recreational pontoon boat carrying 19 passengers capsized and sank in the waters surrounding Alcatraz Island. The emergency triggered an extensive search-and-rescue operation that brought together multiple agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard, local fire departments, helicopter units, and numerous private vessels working tirelessly through the evening.

Initial Confusion Over Vessel Fire

When the emergency call came in shortly after 3:30 p.m., the San Francisco Fire Department initially responded to reports of a vessel fire approximately 600 yards off Alcatraz Island. First responders launched a full marine fire response protocol, expecting to find a burning boat. However, upon arrival, police marine units discovered something entirely different—a three-deck pontoon boat that had overturned in the bay.

San Francisco Fire Chief Dean Crispen explained the situation during a news briefing:

“The Police Department Marine Unit arrived first on the scene and found a capsized vessel, a three-deck pontoon boat, with one patient who was severely injured,” Crispen said during a news briefing. “They initiated CPR and an immediate transport to the shore. And this patient was declared deceased.”

Despite the initial fire reports, San Francisco officials later confirmed that no evidence of a fire had been found. The vessel had departed from the St. Francis Yacht Club before the tragic capsizing occurred.

Rescue Operations Continue Into the Night

As rescue crews worked to save those aboard the sinking vessel, 16 people were successfully pulled from the water between Alcatraz Island and the Golden Gate Bridge. One passenger was confirmed dead, while two others remained unaccounted for as Tuesday evening progressed.

Rescue teams established a triage area on shore and transported survivors to Fort Mason, where paramedics provided medical attention. Officials noted that several passengers sustained injuries, though most appeared to result from the fall into the water rather than burns. Authorities also revealed that some passengers had entered the bay without wearing life jackets.

At one point during the response, officials reported that 13 survivors were safely ashore and that three others were transported to California Pacific Medical Center for further treatment. Earlier reports had indicated that 17 people had been pulled from the water, but the final count settled at 16 rescued passengers.

Challenging Conditions Complicate Search

The search operation faced numerous obstacles as crews worked through the night. Strong winds, changing tides, and the notoriously difficult conditions around Alcatraz Island made locating the missing passengers particularly challenging.

Chief Crispen provided an update on the ongoing efforts:

“We are still conducting an active search of the area,” Crispen said. “We have 11 vessels on the water conducting that search. We are going to continue for hours, to make sure that we find these two missing people, if possible.”

A San Francisco fire official echoed these sentiments during a briefing, stating:

“This search will go on for some time.”

Personal Touches and Official Response

San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie expressed heartfelt condolences to the victim’s family and acknowledged the collaborative effort of multiple agencies involved in the rescue.

“I want to express my condolences to the family members of the deceased,” Lurie said. “This is an all-hands-on-deck search and, hopefully, rescue.”

Lurie specifically thanked the U.S. Coast Guard, San Francisco Police Department, Oakland police, and fire crews for their assistance in the operation. The search involved 11 rescue vessels, divers, helicopters, and marine units from multiple agencies as crews searched the waters between Alcatraz Island and the Golden Gate Bridge.

The vessel eventually sank in approximately 120 feet of water and was reportedly leaking fuel. Personal belongings from the boat could still be seen floating on the surface as crews continued their search for the missing passengers. Local television footage captured during the rescue effort showed the vessel largely submerged, providing a visual testament to the severity of the incident.

As of Tuesday evening, the search remained active, with all available resources committed to finding the two missing passengers and ensuring no one was left behind in the bay’s challenging waters.
