Major Oversights in the 2026 Emmy Award Nominations
Emmy snubs Jeremy Allen White Stranger – Receiving recognition from television’s highest honors is always a privilege, yet missing out entirely carries its own particular disappointment. The Television Academy unveiled its 2026 Emmy nomination slate on Wednesday, July 8, revealing both expected successes and notable disappointments. While anticipated contenders such as “The Pitt” and “Hacks” secured substantial recognition with twenty-five and twenty-four nominations respectively, several audience favorites found themselves excluded from consideration, particularly within premier categories.
Understanding the Eligibility Window
This year’s ceremony honors programming that premiered or streamed during the twelve-month period spanning June 1, 2024 through May 31, 2025. Viewers should note that recent nominations for “The Bear” correspond to its fourth season rather than the fifth and concluding installment that debuted shortly before the announcement. This same timeframe explains why certain popular series missed this year’s ballot entirely. “House of the Dragon” Season 3 on HBO, “Every Year After” on Prime Video, and “Dutton Ranch” on Paramount+ all failed to accumulate sufficient episodes before the cutoff date, positioning them for 2027 consideration instead.
Production requirements also play a crucial role in eligibility. Shows must be produced at least partially through American partnerships to qualify. Consequently, the Canadian hockey romance “Heated Rivalry” faces complete exclusion despite its cultural impact, since Crave produced and distributed the series while HBO Max merely licensed it for American audiences.
Acting Category Disappointments
Among the most surprising omissions involves Jeremy Allen White, whose portrayal of chef Carmy Berzzato in FX and Hulu’s “The Bear” has earned him three prior nominations and two victories for lead actor in a comedy series during 2023 and 2024. His complete absence from the 2026 ballot proved more shocking than any kitchen mishap. Notably, his co-star Ayo Edebiri successfully secured a nomination despite White’s omission.
Steve Martin and Selena Gomez also encountered unexpected rejection. While Martin Short has received lead actor nominations annually since the cozy mystery comedy premiered in 2021, Martin and Gomez accumulated only a single nomination each throughout the series’ extended run. Both were excluded from their respective lead categories in 2026.
Paul Anthony Kelly, praised for his depiction of JFK Jr. in FX/Hulu’s biographical drama, failed to earn recognition despite Sarah Pidgeon’s nomination for playing Carolyn Bessette within the same anthology series.
Series and Supporting Performances Overlooked
Lisa Kudrow achieved a strong return to the lead actress in a comedy series category through her HBO series examining a declining actress’s quest for renewed prominence. Unfortunately, her show could not secure placement among the best comedy series nominees, with recognition going to “Abbott Elementary,” “Hacks,” “Margo’s Got Money Troubles,” “Nobody Wants This,” “Only Murders in the Building,” “Shrinking,” and “Widow’s Bay.”
Both “Stranger Things” and “Euphoria” delivered highly anticipated concluding seasons on Netflix and HBO respectively, yet neither achieved inclusion in the outstanding drama series category. Each received seven total nominations, with Zendaya earning lead actress recognition for “Euphoria.”
Kathy Bates, who earned a 2025 nomination for her work in CBS’s “Matlock” revival, experienced complete exclusion for the show’s second season. Similarly, Netflix’s historical dramedy featuring Michael Shannon as President James Garfield and Matthew Macfadyen as his assassin received only four nominations despite appearing on USA TODAY’s best shows list for 2025. Nick Offerman earned a supporting actor nomination for portraying Vice President Chester A. Arthur, but the series missed recognition for best limited series as well as nominations for both lead actors.
Fans of Taylor Sheridan’s productions may find his influence underrepresented, given that “Landman” and other spinoffs from the “Yellowstone” universe failed to achieve the recognition their creator typically commands.
The 2026 Emmy Awards ceremony will air Monday, September 14 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on NBC, hosted by Mariska Hargitay of “Law and Order: SVU.”
