Trump and Beatty Clash After Judge Blocks Kennedy Center Naming Plan

Cybersecarmor.com – A Kennedy Center board meeting turned sharply confrontational after President Donald Trump learned that a federal court had stopped a new attempt to attach his name to the landmark performing arts complex, Rep. Joyce Beatty said.

Beatty, an Ohio Democrat and a member of the board, described the Sept. 15 Zoom meeting during an appearance on MS NOW. She is the lead plaintiff in Beatty v. Trump, the case in which U.S. District Court Judge Christopher Cooper ruled against the Kennedy Center’s proposed inscription.

Trump serves as the board’s chairman, a position he assumed after appointing himself weeks after beginning his second White House term. Beatty said the discussion became personal after participants were told that the court case had been decided in her favor.

“And he went into a tantrum,” Beatty said. “It was the most unprofessional thing that I’ve ever witnessed or been a part of.”

She said Trump called her an obstructionist, insulted her intelligence and said, “I think you’re incompetent.” Beatty said she responded, “I know you’re incompetent.”

Judge’s ruling renews dispute over the institution’s name

Cooper issued his ruling shortly before the board convened. The judge found that plans to place wording beneath the Kennedy Center sign recognizing Trump’s financial contributions violated federal law. The decision also reinforced Cooper’s May order requiring the institution to remove Trump’s name from its title and signage.

The dispute reaches beyond a question of branding. The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts was established as a national memorial to President John F. Kennedy, and its name and public identity have become central to the legal fight.

Beatty said she challenged Trump during the meeting over the tone of his comments.

“Are we really going to do this? This is really unprofessional,” she said she told him.

She also said Trump told her he would hold her responsible if something fell from the Kennedy Center ceiling and killed someone. Beatty replied by raising broader concerns about war and hunger.

“You’re already killing people. We’re at war. We also have people who are starving,” Beatty said she told the president.

Board approves immediate closure for renovations

Despite the legal setback over the proposed name recognition, the board voted to close most of the Kennedy Center immediately for renovations advocated by Trump. The current board is made up largely of Trump allies selected by the president.

Officials aligned with Trump have argued that the complex is in poor condition, with safety concerns for visitors and audience members. They have also pointed to severe financial problems and warned that bankruptcy could become a possibility without Trump’s promised funding and reconstruction plan.

The closure vote means the naming dispute is now intertwined with the future of the building itself. The Kennedy Center is one of Washington’s most prominent arts venues, hosting performances and events that draw local residents, tourists and national audiences. A prolonged renovation could therefore affect both its day-to-day programming and its public role as a major cultural institution.

After the meeting, Trump said he would not proceed with the renovation unless the court ruling is reversed. He has said he intends to pay for the work personally, while the Justice Department has appealed Cooper’s decision.

“If the ruling is a negative one, which it should not be, and is not overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court, the Reconstruction and the Renovation of The Kennedy Center will not take place,” Trump wrote.

The statement places the renovation proposal on uncertain ground while the appeal moves forward. It also highlights the practical stakes of the court battle: the outcome could shape not only what appears on the building’s exterior, but whether Trump’s proposed overhaul happens at all.

White House focuses on building condition

The White House did not dispute Beatty’s description of the exchange when asked about the meeting. Instead, spokeswoman Liz Huston emphasized the administration’s view that previous leaders allowed the facility to deteriorate.

“For decades, Democrats let the Kennedy Center rot as water damage spread, infrastructure crumbled, and a national treasure fell apart under their watch,” Huston said. “President Trump did what Democrats wouldn’t by finally committing the resources and the leadership needed to restore the Kennedy Center and make it the finest performing arts facility in the world.”

Beatty said Trump also highlighted his background in real estate development and told her that she had “never done anything.” She said she answered by pointing to his record of bankruptcies.

“So I reminded him that he had more bankruptcies than anybody in the room,” Beatty said.

For Beatty, the confrontation reflected more than an argument between two board members. She said she would not accept intimidation from the board chairman and viewed the conflict as tied to Trump’s unsuccessful effort to place his name on the building.

“He didn’t win. He didn’t get his vanity project. He didn’t get his name on it for the second time, so now he’s attacking folks,” Beatty said.

As the appeal proceeds, the Kennedy Center faces parallel questions over its legal identity, its planned closure and renovation, and the funding needed to carry out that work. The dispute has transformed a boardroom disagreement into a broader contest over stewardship of one of the nation’s best-known cultural institutions.
