“I disagree 100% with Jeanine Pirro,” Trump declared in his social media statement regarding his hand-picked U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. He continued, “I don’t know what she was thinking?”

Following his written response, Trump shared video evidence captured by security cameras. The footage showed individuals he believed were responsible for the damage. He characterized their actions as clear vandalism, noting that the culprits appeared to be using cutting tools to remove the newly installed lining from the monument. The former Olympic athlete had been accused of causing more than one thousand dollars in damage to the federal property. However, Pirro’s office presented a different explanation in their updated court filing. They argued that the monument’s deterioration was actually caused by improper installation work performed by the construction contractor. Additionally, they cited the pressure to finish the project quickly before events connected with the America 250 celebration in the weeks around Independence Day 2026.

The department previously alleged Hearn was responsible for over $1000 in damages to the federal property. Pirro’s office wrote in a new court filing that damages to the monument were actually “the result of flawed installation by the contractor … and the rush to complete the project prior to events associated with the America 250 celebration in the weeks surrounding Independence Day 2026.”

Part of Broader Capital Beautification Initiative

The reflecting pool renovations represent only one component of Trump’s larger vision for improving the nation’s capital. His administration has been pursuing various beautification projects throughout Washington, D.C. In an early June social media post, Trump expressed satisfaction with the new dark blue paint applied to the pool’s bottom. He also outlined ambitious plans to fill the structure with clean, beautiful water to enhance its appearance.

However, problems emerged shortly after the improvements were announced. Reports indicated that the new lining began to peel away from the pool’s surface. At the same time, algae growth was observed spreading across the water.
