The legendary “Star Trek” actor, who is now 95 years old, recently shared with USA TODAY that he was fighting Stage 4 malignant melanoma while his daughter Melanie, currently 61, was battling Stage 4 breast cancer approximately three years prior.

Shatner’s medical journey began in June 2023 when he noticed a lump developing on his cheek. Rather than disappearing, the growth continued to expand, prompting his family physician to recommend removal. The subsequent diagnosis proved serious.

“My family doctor says we’ve got to get this out. And it was a stage-four malignancy. Ten years ago, I would have been dead,” Shatner explained. “Imagine going into your doctor’s office, and he says, ‘Pack your bags, you have got five months to live. It’s stage-four melanoma.'”

Coincidentally, around the same timeframe, Shatner’s youngest daughter received her own devastating diagnosis of Stage 4 breast cancer. The parallel timing created an extraordinary situation for the family.

“She, too, was told, ‘Pack your bag, you’ve got five months at the most,'” Shatner remembered. “So it was the two of us.”

The actor reflected on the profound emotional weight of receiving such a limited prognosis. He questioned how anyone would prioritize their remaining time when confronted with such a short horizon.

“Can you imagine being told you’ve got five months to live?” he continued. “I don’t know what your motivations are, or what you’d want to do first, but to be told you’ve only got five months to live? And part of that time you’re going to be very ill. What are you going to do?”

Despite the severity of Shatner’s condition—with cancer spreading to both his lungs and brain—he has successfully emerged from his health battle. Following surgical intervention and two years of immunotherapy treatment, he reports being on the other side of his ordeal. His daughter Melanie has similarly recovered from her cancer scare.

In a joint interview with People magazine, Melanie opened up about the emotional complexity of her situation during that difficult period.

“I remember vividly thinking, ‘I don’t have the strength to take care of myself and lose my father at the same time,'” she shared.

Turning Personal Struggle into Purpose

Channeling their shared experience into something meaningful, the father-daughter team is launching a new weekly podcast series called “No Time But Now” on July 29. The show will feature conversations with health experts and fellow survivors who have navigated serious illness.

The inaugural lineup includes several notable guests. End-of-life advocate Alua Arthur will join the conversation, alongside Olympic gold medalist Scott Hamilton. They will also speak with “The King of Chemo” Ian Ward, author Anita Moorjani (who wrote “Dying to Be Me”), and pioneering nutrition researcher Dr. William Li.

Beyond Melanie, Shatner has two other daughters from his marriage to the late actress Gloria Rand. Leslie Shatner is 67 years old, and Lisabeth Shatner is 65. Together, these three daughters have witnessed their father’s remarkable journey through both personal health challenges and his decades-long career in entertainment.
