Lee, now 39, claims she was sexually assaulted at age 14 while working on the 2001 Disney Channel Original Movie The Poof Point, a production filmed in Utah. Her attorneys say a middle-aged male Disney employee — left unnamed in the complaint — pressured her to drink alcohol, repeatedly harassed her, and ultimately raped her during the shoot.

The Alleged Sequence of Events

According to the legal filing, the entire cast and crew lodged at a single hotel throughout the Utah production. Lee alleges the staffer invited both her and her guardian into his hotel room, framing the visit as a line-reading session. Once inside, the complaint states, she was pressured into consuming alcohol. She then returned to her own room described as “intoxicated and not well.” Later that evening, she was invited to his room alone, where the assault took place. The employee accused was, per the complaint, “at least double her age.”

The suit does not identify the perpetrator by name but characterizes him as an “adult, middle-aged, male employee of Disney who was involved in the filming of the movie.” Lee’s legal team, represented by Douglas Wigdor and Jane Kim, issued a statement on August 22 addressing the broader pattern of adult misconduct in entertainment:

“Over the last decade, countless child actors have come forward to bravely share their experiences of abuse by adults in entertainment. As former government prosecutors, our message to the entertainment industry is simple: This conduct is inexcusable, and those involved — directly or indirectly — must be held accountable.”

Broader Accusations Against the Studio

Beyond the individual assault, the complaint levels sweeping criticism at Disney’s on-set protocols. It alleges the company repeatedly failed to protect Lee, noting that “not a single adult acknowledged the abuse or tried to help her” and asserting that “Disney’s set was not safe for children.” The filing further claims Disney separated Lee from her guardian for the majority of each shooting day and permitted adults to interact with minors in the absence of parental oversight.

The language in the complaint is pointed: “In violating child labor laws, Disney gave Mr. Doe, a child predator, unrestricted and dangerous access to a minor,” it reads. “No one from Disney stopped this extremely inappropriate touching and molestation of a child.”

A Career Built in the Shadow of the Incident

Lee’s path through children’s television began well before The Poof Point. She appeared on Nickelodeon’s The Amanda Show, which ran from 1999 to 2002, and was released from the program at age 13. In a 2022 interview with Business Insider, she described the show’s work environment as inhumane, telling reporter Kate Taylor that she was made to feel “disposable” and dehumanized.

“It’s not about being a human. It’s not about being a child. They don’t care about that,” Lee said. “They care that I have this show that’s worth a lot of money, and my job and life depends on this show being successful.”

Following The Poof Point, Lee took on recurring voiceover roles on Disney Channel’s animated sitcom The Proud Family during the early 2000s. She recently returned to the franchise for its Disney+ revival, The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder, and attended the series’ red-carpet premiere event in Los Angeles in January 2023. The complaint notes the irony of that return:

“[Lee] was thrilled to join Disney in its first movie featuring a Black-American family. Working for Disney forever changed [her] life — but not in the ways she had hoped.”

The filing goes on to describe a dramatic overnight shift in her condition on set: from an “energetic, bright, and diligent child actress who overprepared and studied her lines” to “an exhausted intoxicated, unwell child who could not focus, could not memorize her lines, smelled of alcohol, and was routinely sick or vomiting on set.”

Documentary Spotlight and Ongoing Reckoning

The 2024 docuseries Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV gave Lee a platform to reflect publicly on her treatment as a Black performer in children’s programming. She spoke about the dehumanizing dynamics she experienced on The Amanda Show and the lasting psychological toll of working without adequate adult protection. After the five-episode project aired, she described actor Drake Bell’s on-camera discussion of his own on-set sexual abuse as “retraumatizing,” underscoring how closely intertwined these stories remain for performers who grew up in the same era of unregulated child labor.

The lawsuit arrives amid a wider industry reckoning. Since the early 2020s, a wave of former child performers has spoken publicly about physical, sexual, and emotional abuse sustained during their years in front of cameras. Studios have responded with updated minor-actor policies, mandatory guardian presence requirements, and independent welfare officers on set. Lee’s complaint, however, suggests that for productions dating to the early 2000s, those safeguards were either absent or unenforced — leaving a generation of young performers exposed to adults with unchecked access and no institutional accountability.

The case, now pending in court, will test whether Disney’s current corporate structure bears responsibility for the conduct of a single employee two decades ago, and whether the studio’s failure to maintain basic supervisory protocols constitutes an independent basis for liability. For Lee and the many performers whose stories echo hers, the answer may shape whether justice remains confined to memory or becomes enforceable law.
