Health measures also helped propel Hawaii to the top. About 84% of adults said their health was good or better, and Hawaiians have the longest life expectancy in the United States. Nearly 72% of adults in the state said they feel active and productive each day.

Its performance was not limited to health and lifestyle indicators. Hawaii’s unemployment rate of 2.5% was among the lowest nationally. It also had the third-largest share of households earning more than $75,000 a year, while residents registered the nation’s second-lowest level of financial anxiety.

Those measures do not mean every resident experiences prosperity or ease in the same way. Still, the ranking suggests that statewide patterns in health, employment and perceived financial stability can have a meaningful effect on how people assess their lives.

New Jersey’s Strengths Include Relationships and Mental Health

New Jersey earned the No. 2 position with particularly strong results in relationship and mental-health measures. The state recorded the nation’s lowest depression rate and the highest share of residents who said they have love and supportive relationships in their lives.

The Garden State also ranked well on family stability and household earnings. It had the second-lowest separation and divorce rate among states, along with the second-highest share of households making more than $75,000 annually.

Utah Ranks First for Economic Security

“The happiest states are those that provide above-average quality of life in a wide variety of areas, from strong state economies and great physical and mental healthcare to adequate amounts of leisure time and good weather,” WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo said in a statement.

Lupo also emphasized that financial comfort remains important, even if money alone does not guarantee a satisfying life.

“It’s also important to note that while the adage that money can’t buy happiness has a lot of truth to it, having enough money to live comfortably is still essential. But anything beyond that won’t necessarily enhance happiness as much as having fulfilling hobbies, relationships and opportunities for personal growth.”
