Officials reported on Sunday that a St. Patrick’s Day parade float in Louisville, Kentucky, struck and fatally injured a woman during the event. The incident occurred on Saturday at approximately 4 p.m. EDT along Bardstown Road near Grinstead Drive, as stated by the Louisville Metro Police Department.
The victim, thought to be in her 50s, was walking beside the parade when her foot became entangled with the float. This led to her falling and being pulled under the vehicle, according to police. The float came to a halt, and emergency personnel swiftly transported her to University Hospital. Despite efforts, she passed away shortly after arriving at the facility, the police added.
“I am so sorry to hear about the tragic accident that took a woman’s life at today’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade,” said Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg in a statement. “Please join Rachel and me in keeping her family and friends in your prayers. May her memory be a blessing.”
The case is under review by the traffic unit of the Louisville Metro Police Department. The Hibernian Cultural and Charitable Association, which organized Saturday’s parade, expressed deep sorrow over the incident. In a group statement, they noted, “Its members hearts and prayers are with the family, and all impacted by the event.”
Additionally, the association urged the public to extend their thoughts to those affected and to honor the family’s privacy. Representatives from the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office were not immediately available to comment on NBC News’ inquiry on Monday.
