“We’ve been through a difficult time,” Al-Mawlawi admitted. “It was a period we’d never experienced before. But I always remind myself of the pandemic, when we faced adversity and came out stronger. This time, we’re demonstrating even greater resilience.”
Collaboration with embassies, airlines, and tourism partners was essential in addressing the crisis. A 24-hour hotline, coupled with real-time WhatsApp updates and social media alerts, was established to streamline repatriation processes. The Hamad International Airport became a central hub for these efforts, with Qatar Tourism playing a pivotal role in covering hotel expenses and meals for stranded visitors. Over 194 hotels were mobilized to provide temporary shelter, ensuring that travelers had access to accommodation during the 15-day period of disruption.
Government support extended beyond lodging, with the issuance of approximately 8,000 emergency visas to facilitate the departure of transit visitors. Visa extensions and flexible overstay policies were also introduced to ease the burden on those who had to remain longer than planned. “We ensured that our guests were treated like family,” Al-Mawlawi explained. “By offering free stays and meals, we aimed to create a sense of hospitality and reassurance during a trying time.”
