Thinking of signing up to Metro’s Lifeline challenge? Here’s everything you need to know

A summer of purpose

Picture yourself traversing the scenic Cotswold landscapes, feeling the breeze against your skin and the warmth of the sun as you take each step toward a meaningful cause. Every mile of this journey contributes to supporting those living with dementia, making it more than just a physical activity—it’s a community effort.

What to expect

The Lifeline challenge kicks off on June 13, 2026, at the Royal Agricultural University in Circencester. Participants will join over 2000 others, creating a vibrant atmosphere of shared determination. Whether you walk solo or with companions, the event welcomes all levels of fitness and ability, ensuring a flexible experience for everyone involved.

Team composition

Team Lifeline is a dynamic group of individuals from diverse backgrounds. Some are Metro staff and Alzheimer’s Society members, while others are readers or community members who heard about the initiative through the charity. With a mix of ages and expertise, the team fosters a supportive environment where everyone can contribute at their own pace.

Registration and preparation

Before participating, consider the distance you’re comfortable with. This year, options include 25km, 50km, or 100km, with the latter being either a single-day effort or split over two days. The event is designed to ensure participants aren’t alone in their goals, as each distance will have a dedicated group of walkers.

It’s important to align your choice with your fitness level and training schedule. While the day of the event promises a high-energy experience, preparation is key to reaching your target. Metro.co.uk is proud to partner with Alzheimer’s Society for the 2026 Lifeline campaign, offering a platform for fundraising and community engagement.

Fundraising guide

Each distance comes with a set minimum sponsorship goal: £150 for 25km, £225 for 50km, and £330 for 100km. You can also choose to raise more if you’re inspired to go beyond these targets. Registration starts at £15, but the amount you raise will determine your contribution to vital dementia research and support services.

At least 50% of your fundraising goal should be met three weeks before the event, with the remaining portion due within four weeks of finishing. A JustGiving page has been created to streamline donations, and you’ll receive a personalized link immediately after signing up. Starting early gives you the best chance to meet your target, with regular check-ins and guidance from the organizers to keep you motivated.

Support systems

Throughout the process, you’ll have access to a dedicated Facebook group where participants share tips, training plans, and photos of their practice walks. This space helps maintain momentum and offers a sense of camaraderie. As the event nears, a WhatsApp group will be formed to ensure everyone stays safe and informed about the day’s schedule.

Regular email updates will also be sent, covering start times, route details, and bib numbers. You’ll receive your start-time confirmation four weeks ahead of the challenge and your e-ticket 10–14 days before. The sign-up page includes a FAQ section for any additional questions, making it easy to stay on track.
