British teen Sky Brown is skateboarding world champion again
British Teen Sky Brown Claims Skateboarding World Championship Title Once More
Sky Brown, a 17-year-old British skateboarder, has once again secured the world championship title, following her previous victory at the age of 14. Her triumph in Brazil was celebrated alongside her father, Stewart Brown, a former skateboarder, who joined her in the moment of victory.
“This moment feels monumental, and I’m deeply grateful,” said Brown. “Global conflicts have a greater impact, and I’m praying for worldwide peace.”
The competition in São Paolo faced a postponement due to “unfavorable weather and persistent rain.” By the time the event resumed, the finalists had completed two of the four planned runs. Officials decided to finalize the results after heavy rain rendered the bowl unsafe, leaving skaters unable to proceed further.
Brown emerged victorious with a score of 88.16, narrowly ahead of Japan’s Mizuho Hasegawa, who earned silver at 84.36, and American Minna Stess, who took bronze with 83.90. The British athlete now holds the 7th position in the global rankings, with Hasegawa, a 15-year-old, leading the standings after sharing a heartfelt embrace with Brown following the event.
At just 13, Brown made history as Great Britain’s youngest Olympic medalist, earning bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Games. She repeated this feat at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she won another bronze in the park competition just days after dislocating her shoulder. Her journey began at the age of eight, when she competed in the US Open as a child prodigy, later choosing to represent her country in 2018.
Born in Miyazaki, Japan, to her Japanese mother, Mieko, and British father, Stewart Brown, the young athlete’s path to global stardom is as unique as her style. Her recent success underscores her resilience and skill, cementing her legacy in the sport.
Skateboarding’s Olympic Inclusion
Skateboarding became one of four new sports introduced to the Olympic Games in 2020, with events divided into “park” and “street” disciplines. Brown’s achievements highlight the sport’s growing prominence on the international stage.
