Wireless Festival boss defends Kanye West appearance
Wireless Festival Director Supports Kanye West’s Performance Amid Controversy
Following recent controversies, Melvin Benn, the managing director of Wireless Festival, has publicly supported Kanye West’s inclusion as a headliner. Benn urged audiences to extend the rapper “forgiveness” after backlash emerged over his July appearance. Sponsors including Pepsi, Rockstar Energy, and Diageo have withdrawn from the event, while politicians and Jewish organizations have expressed criticism.
Kanye West, now known as Ye, faced scrutiny for past remarks about Jews and Nazi ideology, notably his 2022 release of a song titled “Heil Hitler” and sale of swastika-themed merchandise. He later apologized, attributing his actions to bipolar disorder. Benn emphasized that West’s inclusion was not about endorsing his views but offering a platform for his music, which is widely consumed by millions.
“Forgiveness and giving people a second chance are becoming a lost virtue in this ever-increasing divisive world,” Benn stated. “What Ye has said in the past about Jews and Hitler is as abhorrent to me as it is to the Jewish community, the prime minister, and others who have commented.”
Benn, who lived on a kibbutz in Israel during the 1970s, described himself as a “deeply committed anti-fascist.” He highlighted his personal experience with mental illness, noting that he has forgiven “despicable behaviour” in a close relationship for over 15 years. “If I wasn’t before, I have become a person of forgiveness and hope in all aspects of my life, including work,” he added.
The UK government is assessing whether West should be allowed entry, with ministers weighing his visa approval. West was previously denied entry to Australia after releasing “Heil Hitler” last May. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer called his potential headline appearance “deeply concerning,” while the Conservative Party urged the government to reject his visa, arguing it sends the wrong message.
Phil Rosenberg, president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, questioned Benn’s stance. “The two key facts remain that Kanye West proclaimed himself a Nazi, and that Wireless stands to benefit financially from his performance,” he said. Rosenberg believed Benn’s statement would not satisfy many in the Jewish community. The Jewish Leadership Council also expressed disappointment, stating Benn’s support “demonstrates a clear failure to understand the issue at hand.”
