Two Met PCs charged over death of pregnant woman

Two Metropolitan Police officers are now facing legal action after a collision involving a pregnant woman and her unborn child resulted in their deaths near the A20 in south-east London. The incident, which occurred on 17 October 2024, involved PC Chris Johnson and former PC Danny Tomkins, both of whom were implicated in the crash. The IOPC investigation concluded in October last year, leading to the charges.

PC Johnson is accused of causing death by dangerous driving, while Tomkins, who was operating a second vehicle, is charged regarding his driving conduct. The woman, aged 38, was the driver at the time of the collision. Her child perished at the scene, and she later succumbed to her injuries in hospital. The pair will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 28 May.

Acting Det Ch Supt James Derham stated: “Our thoughts remain with the woman’s family and friends, who continue to grieve the loss of her and her unborn child. This was a truly terrible and heartbreaking incident.” He added, “The IOPC have conducted a thorough and complex investigation, and we have worked closely with them as their inquiries have progressed.” Derham emphasized the importance of avoiding statements that might influence the court proceedings, noting that further comments would be inappropriate at this stage.
