Tributes after British teenager dies while visiting Vietnam

A 19-year-old British woman, Orla Wates, lost her life in a tragic incident during her trip to Vietnam, as reported by local media. The accident occurred on the Ha Giang Loop, a 350km (217 miles) scenic route through the northern mountains of the country. According to Viet Nam News, she fell from the motorcycle’s rear seat while riding with a local guide, leading to her hospitalization at Hanoi’s Viet Duc Friendship Hospital.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) expressed condolences to Orla’s family and confirmed its support during this challenging period. A spokesperson stated, “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Orla Wates, following her tragic death in Vietnam.” The agency was in communication with local authorities to assist her loved ones.

Family’s Compassionate Choice

Orla’s mother, Henrietta Wates, shared her daughter’s vibrant personality with Viet Nam News. “Orla was beautiful, independent, and very funny, with a sharp wit,” she said. “She loved to look good and lived life to the full.” The family decided to donate Orla’s organs, believing it was her wish to help others.

“We chose to donate Orla’s organs, as we believe that if there were a way to give opportunity to others, this is what Orla would have wanted,” Henrietta added. “Knowing that she is living on through them brings us great comfort.”

Viet Nam News noted that the organ donations enabled five critically ill Vietnamese patients to receive life-saving treatment. A hospital representative highlighted the decision’s significance: “In the face of profound grief, her family made a deeply compassionate decision that transcended nationality and race – to donate her organs, giving others a chance at life… “One journey has come to an end, but her life continues quietly and resiliently in others who have been given a second chance.”

Legacy of a Young Traveler

Orla had been exploring South East Asia before beginning her studies at Durham University. Her father, Andrew Wates, told the hospital that his daughter cherished Vietnam and the gesture of donating her organs to the region was “very important” to their family.

Vietnam is known for its hazardous road conditions, with over 10,000 fatalities and 16,000 injuries recorded in traffic accidents during 2024. Many tour operators recommend hiring a local guide for inexperienced riders to navigate the challenging terrain safely.
