How rescue of US airman in remote part of Iran unfolded

In a daring nighttime operation, US forces successfully retrieved a missing airman following the downing of his fighter jet in a secluded region of Iran. While the precise details of the event are still uncertain, the effort to extract him from the terrain in enemy-controlled areas presented significant logistical challenges.

A coalition of hundreds of special forces personnel, dozens of fighter jets, and helicopters, alongside the CIA, executed the intricate plan. The US President, Donald Trump, highlighted the mission in a social media post:

“We have rescued the seriously wounded and remarkably courageous F-15 crew member from deep within the Iranian mountains.”

The incident began on Friday when reports emerged that an F-15 jet, carrying a weapons systems officer and pilot, was shot down over southern Iran. This marked the first instance of a US fighter jet being shot down by enemy fire in over two decades. Both crew members managed to eject, with the pilot recovered on the same day, while the second officer remained unaccounted for.

Iran emphasized its intent to capture the officer alive, offering a £50,000 ($66,100) reward. Unverified social media videos suggested armed civilians were actively searching for him. Upon landing, the officer was armed with just a handgun, according to US officials speaking to CBS News.

Training protocols likely instructed him to activate his beacon, seek elevated terrain, remain hidden, and establish contact. The officer, concerned the signal could be intercepted, chose to disable it and wait in a mountain crevice. CBS reported that he remained undetected for hours, relying on his survival skills to avoid capture.

A senior official from the Trump administration noted the CIA’s pivotal role in the operation.

“The agency tracked the airman’s exact position to the mountain crevice and relayed it to the Pentagon,”

they explained. The officer’s movements were monitored “24 hours a day” by top US officials, Trump added, as he was “being hunted down by our enemies, who were getting closer by the hour.”

The CIA reportedly launched a deception effort, spreading rumors within Iran that US forces had already secured the second airman. Trump claimed the military deployed dozens of aircraft equipped with the world’s most advanced weaponry to recover the officer. As special forces approached, bombs and firepower were used to deter Iranian troops, CBS reported.
