Football rally in Peru leaves one dead and dozens injured

Football Rally in Peru Results in Tragedy

A fatal incident occurred during a pre-match gathering at a Lima stadium, leaving one fan dead and multiple others injured. The Peruvian government has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the event. Early reports claimed sections of the stadium’s wall had collapsed, but this has since been contested by officials.

Officials’ Statements and Clarifications

Peruvian Health Minister Juan Carlos Velasco Guerrero confirmed the death at a Lima hospital, stating that 47 individuals were affected, with three in critical condition. The event took place at Alejandro Villanueva Stadium, where supporters of Alianza Lima, the home team, gathered wearing team shirts and displaying flags ahead of a derby against Universitario de Deportes.

“There are no collapsed walls or sections fallen into the pit,” said Fire Chief Marcos Pajuelo, addressing concerns about the stadium’s structural integrity.

The football league announced that Saturday’s match would proceed as scheduled. However, the interior ministry initially reported that 40 firefighters were deployed to an emergency involving individuals trapped within the stadium’s structure. Alianza Lima later issued a statement on X, clarifying that the incident was not linked to the collapse of walls or structural elements.

League’s Commitment to Safety

Peruvian Professional Football League officials emphasized their ongoing investigation into the rally’s circumstances. They reiterated their dedication to ensuring the safety of spectators at all sporting events.
