Balamory is back – Miss Hoolie and PC Plum lift the lid on what to expect

Balamory Reimagined: A Nostalgic Return for Iconic Characters

After more than two decades since its original run, the beloved children’s series Balamory is back on the air. Julie Wilson Nimmo, who portrayed Miss Hoolie, and Andrew Agnew, known for his role as PC Plum, are eager to share the excitement of the revival. “What’s the story now?” Wilson Nimmo is asked, a question that has echoed through the years as the show’s legacy continues to inspire.

“People have been asking me that for over 20 years, nearly every day,” Wilson Nimmo reflects. “It’s been a huge part of my life, and seeing it return feels like coming full circle.”

Balamory, which once captivated millions worldwide, centered on a vibrant island community where friends solved daily challenges with creativity and joy. Now, the show is rebooting this month, bringing back key figures like Penny Pocket, the shopkeeper, and Edie McCredie, the delivery driver. Wilson Nimmo emphasizes the emotional significance of the revival, calling it a “love letter to the original.”

“It’s such an honor to be back doing something we adore,” Agnew adds. “PC Plum is still keeping the island safe, just as he always has.”

As the BBC grapples with declining UK children’s content, Balamory’s comeback arrives at a pivotal moment. The show once drew two million weekly viewers in the UK and fans across Europe, Australia, Hong Kong, Canada, and South Africa. Wilson Nimmo and Agnew hope the familiar charm will appeal to a new generation. “Children are surrounded by animation these days, which is great,” Wilson Nimmo notes. “But it’s rare to see a show that puts kids in front of kids on screen.”

The return of the original cast has stirred a wave of nostalgia. Wilson Nimmo recalls the first script read-through as an emotional event, where the show’s songs reignited cherished memories. Agnew humorously recalls being recognized in Turkey while in swimwear, with children shouting, “You’re PC Plum!”

The new series introduces fresh characters, including Dr. Ollie (Carl Spencer), a veterinarian with his own family, and The Harbourmaster (William Andrews). While actor Miles Jupp, who played inventor Archie in the original, isn’t returning, a new resident inventor, Ava Potts (Danielle Jam), steps into the role. “The island would not be the same without PC Plum,” Agnew says, highlighting the character’s enduring presence. “He’s still a bit clueless, but that’s part of his charm.”

Viewers can anticipate a blend of old and new, with revamped songs that modernize the show’s signature tunes. Agnew mentions the familiarity of the original melodies, which many still sing by heart. “People come up to me and hum my songs—it’s a lovely connection,” he jokes. The series will feature 10 episodes per season, produced by Lion Television Scotland, and will debut on CBeebies on Monday, April 20th, with all episodes available on BBC iPlayer the same day.
