Inside the family home struck by lightning leaving 10 foot hole and £20,000 worth of damage

Lightning Strike Creates 10-Foot Hole in Family Home, Causing £20,000 in Damage

A woman expecting a baby faces a £20,000 repair cost after lightning struck her home, creating a 10-foot gap in the structure. The incident occurred in Gristhorpe, near Filey, North Yorkshire, during a storm on Wednesday, March 25.

Tara Craven, 28, recounted the chaos as a “bomb-like” explosion shook her three-bedroom house. At the time, she was washing dishes while her husband, Joseph, 32, bathed their two young sons, aged two and three. The sudden force of the lightning strike left the family scrambling outside, where they discovered the devastation.

“We had no idea what had happened – other than it came as a huge shock, it was terrifying,” said Mrs. Craven, who is four weeks away from childbirth.

Residents reported the air filled with a sharp, electrical scent and dust after the strike. The damage was extensive, with the roof partially torn off, the chimney destroyed, and walls reduced to rubble. The conservatory’s roof was completely blown away, and the TV in the living room exploded, scattering debris across the room.

Due to safety concerns, the family lost access to electricity and were forced to stay at a Travelodge in Scarborough. Mrs. Craven described the aftermath the following day, noting bricks had been thrown up to 30 feet, some damaging nearby properties. One brick even struck the roof of a neighbor’s car.

“At least no one was hurt or worse, so we have to count our blessings,” she added.

The lightning storm also caused power outages for several homes in the area, triggered by a fallen telegraph pole. North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed crews from Scarborough and Filey responded to the incident, checking for fires and advising residents. The power grid was eventually restored by engineers.

Metro has sought comments from the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and Northern Powergrid to further detail the event.
