Influencer caught smuggling £150,000 of cannabis back from Thailand

A social media influencer was apprehended attempting to smuggle over £150,000 in cannabis from Thailand to the UK. The 23-year-old, Ellie Crampsie, admitted her involvement in the distribution of the class-B drug at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on March 26.

Details of the Arrest

Crampsie, from Broomhouse, Glasgow, was detained after customs officers discovered more than 17kg of the substance in her luggage during her return from a holiday in Thailand. The drug was found concealed in 17 sealed packages, with an estimated value of £115,000 to £151,000.

Prosecution’s Account

Emma Laing, the prosecutor, explained that Crampsie was stopped by Border Force agents in April last year. The influencer had flown from Paris to Edinburgh, where she was questioned about her travel plans. She confirmed her journey originated in Thailand, according to the court records.

“She was asked the usual questions by the officer and she confirmed she had travelled from Thailand,” Ms Laing stated.

Defense Argument

Crampsie’s legal team highlighted her support system, noting her parents were present in court. They suggested the case might be influenced by her family’s involvement, though this did not absolve her of the charges.

Court Proceedings

Sheriff Graeme Watson delayed the sentencing to review a criminal justice social work report and a liberty restriction assessment. “That should be no prejudgment of what comes next, all sentencing options will be open to me on the next occasion, do you understand that?” he emphasized.

The case mirrors a recent situation involving a young mother who avoided incarceration after trying to transport £285,000 worth of cannabis from Thailand to the UK. Poppie Kudieersky, 22, claimed traffickers would have killed her child if she refused to act as a drug courier. She was arrested at Manchester Airport when her companion was searched, revealing two suitcases containing 28.5kg of the drug.
