Manhunt after attempted arson attack on synagogue

Authorities are searching for two individuals following an arson attempt at the Finchley Reform Synagogue in north London. The suspects, reportedly wearing face coverings, targeted the building late into the night by hurling a brick and two suspected petrol containers toward it. No harm was reported, and damage to the structure remained minimal.

The Metropolitan Police has classified the incident as a hate crime directed against the Jewish community. This follows a similar attack last month, where four ambulances from a Jewish charity were set ablaze. Counter-terrorism units are now assisting in both investigations.

Community Response

“Finchley Reform Synagogue is a proud, progressive, and welcoming space for all,” stated Cantor Zoë Jacobs. “This act is clearly aimed at intimidating the British Jewish community.”

Sarah Sackman, Labour MP for Finchley and Golders Green, condemned the attack as a “shocking” act. “I refuse to let this become the new normal,” she said. “British Jews deserve to live freely, whether in nurseries or places of worship, without fear.”

Leadership Statements

Mayor of London Sir Sadiq Khan expressed gratitude for the police’s swift response on social media. “Though no one was hurt, the Met is asking anyone with clues to step forward,” he noted.

The Community Security Trust (CST), which monitors antisemitism in the UK, confirmed its support for the synagogue and collaboration with law enforcement. The Jewish Leadership Council called the incident “horrifying,” emphasizing its symbolic impact on the community.

Antisemitism Trends

The Holocaust Educational Trust highlighted the event as part of a “broader pattern of rising antisemitism.” They urged immediate action to counter such threats.

Det Ch Supt Luke Williams reiterated the Met’s commitment to addressing the community’s concerns. “We’re working closely with the synagogue and community leaders to ensure this is resolved swiftly,” he said. “Any CCTV or dash cam footage could be crucial in identifying those responsible.”

Call to Action

Residents and witnesses are encouraged to provide information to the police. The Met continues to prioritize community safety and is actively pursuing leads. BBC Radio London and BBC London’s social media platforms offer additional resources for updates and local news coverage.
