Ex-Player Barton Refutes Golf Club Altercation Claims

Joey Barton, the ex-professional footballer, has denied allegations of attacking a man at a Merseyside golf club. The 43-year-old, hailing from Widnes, is currently in custody and set to face a seven-day trial beginning on 1 September. This comes after he was denied bail during an earlier magistrates’ court hearing.

Barton, alongside co-defendant Gary O’Grady, 50, is charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Kevin Lynch, 51, a former non-league football manager and founder of NexGen Academy. The incident occurred at Huyton and Prescot Golf Club on 8 March, during which Lynch reportedly sustained severe injuries to his eye.

O’Grady appeared in court but did not yet plead. The prosecution stated that the defendants had been consuming alcohol with Lynch prior to the alleged altercation. Barton, who has played for clubs including Manchester City, Newcastle United, QPR, Rangers, Burnley, and Marseille, also managed Fleetwood Town during his career.
