Jim Carrey’s ex reveals what we missed about his ‘unrecognisable’ face

Jenny McCarthy, 53, the former partner of Hollywood actor Jim Carrey, has shared insights into the controversy surrounding his appearance at a recent awards event. The incident sparked widespread theories that he might have been replaced by a clone or a person in disguise.

The Face That Divided the Internet

At the César Awards in February, Carrey, 64, was invited to receive an honorary accolade for his work in film and television. Despite delivering his speech in French, the actor’s look that night left many questioning his identity. His face appeared more rounded, his skin unusually smooth, and his jawline sharper than usual, prompting fans to suggest he might have undergone cosmetic procedures like Botox or fillers.

Some even questioned his height and eye color, with online users debating whether he had changed physically. Others noted differences in his posture and movements, leading to speculation that he was not the real Jim Carrey. A makeup artist famous for dramatic transformations added fuel to the fire by claiming to have impersonated him, posting a photo of a mask, wig, and false teeth on social media with the caption: “Alexis Stone as Jim Carrey in Paris.”

“He looked very happy at that award show. And I was happy for him,” McCarthy told People Magazine. “That’s the first thing I noticed. I said, ‘Oh wow, Jim looks really happy.’”

“We’re so obsessed with how he looks that we didn’t consider how happy he looked,” added her husband, Donnie Wahlberg, who attended the iHeartRadio Music Awards on Thursday.

A Well-Planned Appearance

Carrey’s publicist, Marleah Leslie, and the César Awards’ general delegate, Gregory Caulier, both clarified the confusion. Caulier emphasized that the event had been meticulously planned, stating: “Jim Carrey’s visit has been arranged since this summer. From the outset, he was deeply honored by the Academy’s invitation. Eight months of ongoing, constructive discussions led to this moment.”

He highlighted Carrey’s effort in preparing the French speech, even asking for precise pronunciation guidance. The actor arrived with his partner, daughter, grandson, and 12 close friends, turning the ceremony into a family celebration. Michel Gondry, Carrey’s longtime collaborator, was also present, reuniting with the star for the occasion.

McCarthy and Carrey dated from 2005 to 2010, ending their relationship amicably. She has since expressed her enduring admiration for him, stating she would “always keep Jim as a leading man in my heart.” The couple married in 2014, with McCarthy’s comments on the event serving as a reminder of their shared history.

Carrey seemed to signal his retirement in 2022, claiming he had “done enough” in his career and cherished his “quiet life.” However, he left room for a return, joking that he’d only re-enter Hollywood if an angel presented him with a script “written in gold ink” that “really important” for audiences to see. By the end of 2024, he had returned for Sonic The Hedgehog 3, reprising his role as Dr. Robotnik for the third time. At the premiere, he joked: “I bought a lot of stuff and I need…”
