Taxi Driver ‘Attacked Passenger for Burping in His Car’
A Costa del Sol taxi driver was apprehended after allegedly assaulting an Irish tourist for burping during a ride. The incident occurred in Fuengirola, a popular holiday resort, and led to the victim being hospitalized with severe injuries.
The 65-year-old man was reportedly thrown to the ground by the driver, sustaining head and facial trauma. He was first taken to a medical facility in Las Lagunas before being moved to Marbella’s hospital for further treatment.
According to accounts, the 51-year-old driver demanded the unnamed passenger exit the vehicle after they burped inside. The tourist was later found to have struck his head on the curb following the altercation, which escalated when he and a companion stepped out of the cab.
The second individual involved in the incident remained unscathed, though the event unfolded near a seaside hotel on the promenade. Police sources indicated the victim was under the influence of alcohol at the time, though it remains unclear whether they are still in hospital or their condition has stabilized.
Arrest and Legal Proceedings
The driver was detained by National Police officers from a rapid response unit, who arrived alongside paramedics called in by witnesses. He was subsequently released on bail following an appearance before an investigating judge, with a criminal investigation ongoing.
Previous Incident in the Same Area
This marks the second time a taxi driver in Fuengirola has faced allegations of violence against a tourist. Last November, a similar confrontation occurred when a driver reportedly dragged a passenger along the road after an argument over the fare.
The victim in that case, whose nationality was not disclosed, was treated at the same hospital as the current incident. They suffered head injuries when the driver accelerated, causing the passenger to lose their grip on a door handle.
