Darline Graham Nordone Named to Succeed Brother Lindsey in South Carolina Senate Seat

A Family Bond Forged Through Loss

Lindsey Graham s sister will fill - Darline Graham Nordone, the elder sister of the late Senator Lindsey Graham, has been selected to complete her brother's remaining time in the U.S. Senate. The appointment comes following the sudden passing of the 71-year-old Republican on July 11, 2026, when he succumbed to an aortic rupture caused by arterial hardening.

This selection makes Nordone the first woman ever to represent South Carolina in the nation's upper chamber. Governor Henry McMaster formally announced the decision on July 13, revealing that he had contacted Nordone the previous day to request her service, and she accepted the position with visible emotion.

First Public Remarks from the New Senator

Speaking at a press conference on July 13, Nordone shared her feelings about stepping into this historic role. Her comments marked her first appearance in public since her brother's unexpected death.

"Lindsey has always been there for me, and I will be there for him," Graham Nordone stated during the event. She described her brother as an exceptional leader and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to continue his legislative work. "It is such a privilege to get to finish some of his important work, and I promise to work hard over the next several months to support the president and carry forward the efforts of my brother on behalf of the citizens of South Carolina and the United States."

Despite having no prior political experience, Nordone expressed confidence in her ability to serve. Her professional background involves assisting individuals with disabilities in securing employment. She noted that the support of her brother's congressional staff and fellow legislators gives her the assurance she needs to succeed in this new capacity.

"I think this is what Lindsey would've wanted, and I plan to honor him in this way," Graham Nordone said, acknowledging the legacy she would carry. "Now, to Lindsey, I miss you more than I can even put into words, but I'm going to do this. I got it."

Presidential and Congressional Endorsements

President Donald Trump publicly endorsed Nordone's appointment through a Truth Social post released shortly before Governor McMaster's announcement. The President praised the selection as a meaningful tribute to his longtime ally.

"I recommended, to Governor Henry McMaster, Lindsey Graham's wonderful sister, Darline, to serve as interim Senator from the Great State of South Carolina," Trump wrote. "This would be a fabulous tribute to Lindsey, who loved her dearly!"

Senate Majority Leader John Thune also voiced his support for the appointment, telling CNN that the decision "would make a lot of sense" given the circumstances.

The Graham Family Legacy

Lindsey Graham, who remained unmarried throughout his life and had no children, frequently spoke about his close relationship with his younger sister. Their bond was strengthened by the tragic loss of both parents during their youth.

Their mother, Millie, passed away from Hodgkin's lymphoma in 1976 when Lindsey was 20 years old and Darline was just 11. Their father, Florence James Graham, died of a heart attack approximately 15 months later, according to reports from The New York Times.

"Lindsey was always my parent," Nordone told the Times in a previous interview. "There was no doubt in my mind or anyone else's mind that Lindsey was my guardian."

"He was a young man taking on a young girl and teenager to raise," Nordone continued. "He was just dedicating all of that time to raising me and going to school and trying to get an education. There's just only so much time in a day."

Nordone also described her brother as someone who embodied multiple roles simultaneously. "Graham is kind of like a brother, a father and a mother rolled into one," she explained.

Looking Ahead: The Path Forward

It remains uncertain whether Nordone will seek election to complete Graham's term or simply serve as an interim placeholder. The late senator had been pursuing a fifth Senate term in the 2026 midterm elections, having successfully defeated several opponents, including wealthy businessman Mark Lynch, in South Carolina's Republican primary last month.

Under state law, candidates interested in running for Graham's seat must file for a special primary election by July 21. That primary is scheduled for August 11.

South Carolina Republicans will need to select a new nominee through this special primary process. Several potential candidates have emerged, including Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette and former Representative Nancy Mace, both of whom ran for governor earlier this year without success. Representative Russell Fry, who represents South Carolina's 7th congressional district, has also been mentioned as a contender. Former Representative Trey Gowdy and current Representative William Timmons have similarly been discussed as possible candidates.

On the Democratic side, Annie Andrews, a pediatrician who previously lost a general election race for Representative Nancy Mace's congressional seat in 2022, is expected to be the party's nominee in the general election.

The special primary election on August 11 will determine which Republican candidate will face Andrews in the November general election, potentially deciding whether Nordone's interim service becomes permanent or temporary.
